“Introduction to the Georgia Court System
Magistrate courts in Georgia have jurisdiction (legal authority) over civil lawsuits where damages being sought are Fifteen Thousand Dollars ($15,000) or less. Magistrate courts are often referred to as “small claims” court because of this damages limit. There are 159 Magistrate courts in the state of Georgia.
Georgia’s State courts were created in the 1970s and these courts may exercise jurisdiction over all misdemeanor violations, including traffic cases, and all civil actions. Unlike Magistrate Court, lawsuits in State Court do not have a limit on the amount of damages that are being claimed. … ”
